Case Comment, Sattazahn v Pennsylvania: In the Spirit of Apprendi? I wrote these two pieces in law school while a member and associate editor of the New York Law School Law Review. Both relate to the question, as framed by Justice Thomas, of "What constitutes a crime?" Perhaps the most famous case in the line is Apprendi v. New Jersey. More than anything else, I attribute my love for legal writing and doctrine to grappling with this particular issue and give credit to my criminal law professor for presenting and teaching it with contagious enthusiasm.
